From the Lake - Georgie O'Keeffe
Georgia O'Keeffe is one of the most significant female artists of the 20th century. One of O'Keefe's most popular paintings, from the lake, is an abstraction, the artists unique perception and personal observations of nature's beauty. It is a wonderful image of calm, smooth water, painted in harmonious shades of intense color. The abstraction is produced through a simplification of the waves, that is, the water’s complexity is diminished by using confident, enormous patterns that symbolize the dynamics of flowing fluid. Her choice of bold colors is an impressive contrast to water’s usual pastel hues and soft shades.
Students implemented water color techniques of creating translucent washes, layering and blending colors, even leaving the viscosity of the paint thicker for the darker tones. Students learned that when using water color paints we often use just clean water, with no paint, for blending colors together, while in other areas it is necessary to have a slight amount of thinned paint to blend in other areas, depending on the type of effect you are trying to achieve. ...
